Nina Hartley was born Marie Louise Hartman on March 11, 1959 in Berkeley, California. Hartley was the youngest of four siblings and spent most of her childhood in the Bay Area. She attended Berkeley High School, then took up nursing at the San Francisco State University and graduated magna cum laude. She began her career in the adult industry by working as a stripper during her sophomore years in college. Hartley did her first porn movie in 1984 appearing alongside Juliet Anderson in the movie Educating Nina. She has appeared in a number of documentaries about the pornographic industry and mainstream movies, most notably in 1997 drama film Boogie Nights. Hartley is also a sex-positive activist and a board member of the Woodhull Freedom Foundation, a non-profit organization that advocates sexual rights.
